Important assessment roll dates for property owners
Each year, there are eight key dates that Irondequoit property owners should be aware of:
- Taxable Status Date – March 1
- Final date to submit new and renewal exemption applications.
- The assessments published on the upcoming tentative and final assessment rolls are based on the property’s condition and ownership as of Taxable Status Date.
- If it is a year when the town is conducting a townwide reassessment, assessment impact notices will be mailed out on or before this date.
- Tentative Roll Date – May 1
- The tentative assessment roll is made available to the public. A paper copy is available in Town Hall. Within ten days, an electronic copy is available on the Town of Irondequoit website.
- Assessments are based on two things:
- The property’s condition and ownership on Taxable Status Date, and
- The value of the property on the previous year’s Valuation Date (see below).
- You should check your assessment soon after Tentative Roll Date and before Grievance Day (see below).
- School Budget Voting Day – Third Tuesday in May
- All voting age residents are eligible to vote on your school district’s budget.
- Grievance Day – Fourth Tuesday in May
- If you wish to contest your property’s assessment on the tentative assessment roll, you must file a grievance application with our office between May 1 and Grievance Day (the fourth Tuesday in May).
- Final Roll Date – July 1
- The assessments shown on the final assessment roll will be used for the purpose of calculating your upcoming September School tax bill and your upcoming January Town & County tax bill.
- If you grieved your assessment and did not receive the relief you requested, you can apply for judicial review of your assessment (SCAR hearing) within 30 days following Final Roll Date.
- Valuation Date – July 1
- The assessments published on the following year’s tentative and final assessment rolls will be based on the value of your property as of Valuation Date.
- School property tax bills
- Mailed in the beginning of September. An electronic copy is available on the Monroe County Real Property Portal.
- Pay close attention to the deadline for payments.
- Town & County property tax bills
- Mailed in the beginning of January. An electronic copy is available on the Monroe County Real Property Portal.
- Pay close attention to the deadline for payments.
Local budget dates
If you are concerned with the amount of property taxes being collected in Irondequoit, you may wish to be involved with the local budgeting processes. There are public meetings you can attend and voice your opinion, and you also have the opportunity to vote on your school budget.
For school district taxes, in addition to voting on the budget, you can attend budget meetings. Generally, the budget meetings are held in the spring through early April.
For town and county taxes, budget meetings are typically held in the fall through mid-November. Special districts (fire districts, sewer districts, etc.) also hold public meetings, but the dates vary. Contact the district for more information.
