Historic Resource Survey

The 2025 Town-wide Reconnaissance-level Historic Resource Survey was the first project of its kind completed on Irondequoit. The final report provides a summary overview of the town's history from the 1600s-1970s, describes the historic trends and themes of the town's development and how they manifest in the built environment, identifies several potential historic districts containing thousands of properties, identifies over one hundred individually eligible historic properties, analyzes the report's findings, and provides recommendations for future study and projects.

The report, by virtue of its holistic approach, is not exhaustive; instead, it is a critical and foundational body of research used to guide future historic preservation planning throughout the Town of Irondequoit including, but not limited to: additional intensive-level historic resource surveys, National Register Historic District nominations, local landmark designation, and local preservation district designation. The project, completed in partnership between the Town's professional consultant and the Historic Preservation Commission, was made possible through a Certified Local Government Grant awarded by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation.

The complete report with its appendices is available at the link below.

Overview

The Historic Preservation Commission was formed in 2001 to preserve and protect local historic sites and foster civic pride in and awareness of the history of the Town of Irondequoit. It reviews and approves applications for landmark designation and certificates of appropriateness for proposed changes to designated landmarks as authorized in the Town code. In addition to its designation and review powers, the commission also conducts surveys of landmarks and historic districts, increases public awareness of local history through public education, and advises Town government on acquiring landmark structures and on the utilization of state, federal, and private funds to promote historic preservation efforts.

The criteria for the designation of landmarks and approval of certificates of appropriateness are set by Chapter 236 of the Town Code and are in keeping with standards established by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation. Those interested in designating their historic properties should contact the Town Historian at 585-336-7269.

Schedule of Public Hearings

The Historic Preservation Commission will adjourn all unfinished business at 9 pm and matters not completed will be held to the next scheduled commission meeting.
